Child Support

In Texas, parents have a legal duty to financially support their children. When parents divorce or separate, one parent will be responsible to pay support to the parent with whom the children primarily reside. The calculation of child support is based on a percentage of the paying parent’s income each month; the percentage applied varies depending on the number of children involved, the cost of medical support for the child, whether the paying parent has other children to whom he/she owes a duty to support, and other case-by-case factors. The Texas Attorney General’s website has useful tips and resources regarding questions about child support, and that is the agency in Texas that collects and monitors payment of child support.
